Casa Nova Pijnacker

Casa Nova Pijnacker

STATUS: competition, 3rd prize
YEAR: 2008
PROGRAM: urban design, HOUSING

This new suburb of Pijnacker, the Netherlands, borders the historical “polder” landscape of Holland.  The typology of the dike and its typical dike-house forms the main concept of this new city quarter. The dike screens private gardens from the public domain allowing for a very high density (42 units per acre) without privacy issues. The dike houses have two entrances: One at the top and one at the bottom of the dike, this allows for a working space at home with a separate entrance. The top of the dike offers a pedestrian and cyclist route at safe distance from car traffic. The central amenities of the city quarter (supermarket and station) can be reached by pedestrians and cyclists avoiding level crossings with car traffic.
