Library Hamburg

Library in Hamburg

STATUS: project pitch
YEAR: 2005
PROGRAM: Arts & Culture
LOCATION: Hamburg, Germany

The project is located between Hamburg’s old city centre and the new “harbour city”. A pedestrian route from the city centre to the new harbour city passes through the entrance foyer, providing access to both the library and the archaeological museum. The library consists of an ensemble of three building blocks. Two of the blocks contain the public part of the library – one of them introvert with reading spaces towards an atrium and one of them extrovert with reading terraces towards a big window to the city and the St. Petri church. The third building block is allocated to the administration of the library. The archaeological museum forms the “base” of the building and uses the height difference of the site. From the foyer the visitor walks down to the excavations.
